“For, more than just a day, Christmas is a state of mind. It is found throughout the year whenever faith overcomes doubt, hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. It is present when men of any creed bring love and understanding to the hearts of their fellow man. The feeling is seen in the wondrous faces of children and in the hopeful eyes of the aged. It overflows the hearts of cheerful givers and the souls of the caring. And it is reflected in the brilliant colors, joyful sounds, and beauty of the winter season. Let us resolve to honor this spirit of Christmas and strive to keep it throughout the year.” –Ronald Reagan

“We will encourage all Americans — men and women, young and old, individuals of every race, creed, and color — to succeed and be healthy, happy, and whole. This is our goal. We see America not falling behind, but moving ahead; our citizens not fearful and divided, but confident and united by shared values of faith, family, work, neighborhood, peace and freedom. An opportunity society begins with growth, and that means incentives. … [M]y sympathies are with the taxpayers, not the tax-spenders. I consider stopping them from taking more of your earnings an economic responsibility and a moral obligation. I will not permit an antigrowth coalition to jeopardize this recovery. If they get their way, they’ll charge everything on your ‘Taxpayers Express Card.’ And believe me, they never leave home without it.” –Ronald Reagan

In February, it was reported that Michelle Obama’s showplace for her campaign for healthy kids’ meals, the Chicago Public Schools, is having difficulty selling the First Lady’s baloney to kids. When more healthful meal options were introduced, sales of school lunches dropped by 5 percent from the prior year. There were many accounts of students throwing away their lunches, while others opted for “cookies and slushies” from the canteen or simply waited until they got home to eat. The vast majority of students viewed the new food options as, er, “undesirable.”

One school, however, found a solution — ban alternative sources of food entirely. At Little Village Academy on Chicago’s West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria. Understandably, this has students in revolt. In typical nanny-state thinking, the principal says it’s her intention to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

This decision has economic ramifications. Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district’s food provider. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch.

Antitrust laws were enacted to increase consumer choice In the world of antitrust, when a person with monopoly power in one market, say a school or a public school system, makes a consumer buy something in another market that the consumer doesn’t want or need in order to get the good or service it wants, it’s called a “tie-in.” In Chicago, if you want a public education, in some schools you now have to take the meals provided by the district’s caterer, whether or not you want them. This reduces Chicago public school meals to a form of Hobson’s Choice — “you can have a free meal from us, or nothing at all.”

Coventry:

“You refuse treatment-therefore we withdraw our society from
you, we cast you out, we divorce you. To Coventry with you.”

“You talk as if I had committed a murder-I simply punched a
man in the nose for offending me outrageously.”

“You are a dangerous individual, a danger to all of us, for we
can not predict what damage you may do next.”

I found Mr. Heinlein’s work many years ago as a young boy seeking escape from many of the troubles of that time. As I read his works today I fear he may have been predicting future events more than just sharing entertaining “stories”. The above excerpts are from a short he wrote titled Coventry, find it, read it, think about it. We do indeed live in interesting times. While one man (boy) may change a nation’s way of speaking should he? Should all offensive acts cause a removal from society? Who makes that judgement? What agency would you grant the control of thought, act or deed? The end of “Coventry” finds that the primary character has “rehabilitated” himself by selfless acts supporting the system in power….

To Keep and Bear Arms

“Eighty-two-year-old Robert Wallace from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, may be spending the rest of his life in jail after defending his home. In February, Wallace says that he witnessed two thieves hooking his flatbed trailer to their pickup truck. The suspects ignored demands to stop and sped off with the trailer; Wallace says that he fired two shots toward the truck as they were leaving.

Just minutes later, Damacio Torres, 32, arrived at the ER at a local hospital to get Alvaro Cardona, 28, medical attention. The latter had been struck in the face by a bullet. Later, Torres admitted to police that they stole the trailer from Wallace’s home. According to Wallace, the suspects threatened him during the incident, and he says, “They almost ran me over”

Despite the confession of the crime, and despite both Torres and Cardona living in the United States illegally with arrest records, neither suspect so far has been charged with any wrongdoing. Ironically, Wallace is being charged with 12 felony counts, four of those on the count of attempted first-degree murder. While currently free on bond, Wallace’s court date is scheduled for September; at age 82, he may well spend the rest of his life in prison.” (“The Patriot Post (www.patriotpost.us/subscribe/ “)

It is a sad state of affairs when we are not allowed to defend our property and our lives.

“The fact is, we’ll never build a lasting economic recovery by going deeper into debt at a faster rate than we ever have before. … Inflation is the cause of recession and unemployment. And we’re not going to have real prosperity or recovery until we stop fighting the symptoms and start fighting the disease. There’s only one cause for inflation — government spending more than government takes in. The cure is a balanced budget. Ah, but they tell us, 80 percent of the budget is uncontrollable. It’s fixed by laws passed by Congress. Well, laws passed by Congress can be repealed by Congress. And, if Congress is unwilling to do this, then isn’t it time we elect a Congress that will?” –Ronald Reagan

Freedom and economic advance go hand in hand; they are two sides of the same coin. The mainspring of human progress is found not in controlling and harnessing human energy but in setting it free. The most valuable resource is not oil or precious metals or even territory; it’s the infinite richness of human potential. The creative genius and diligence unleashed when people are free and working to improve their lot and that of their families is the greatest force for good on this planet.” –Ronald Reagan
