Things seem to be getting crazy out there in the world. We see a lot of folks worried, oh hell, scared really. World financial problems, crazy government actions, folks talking about numbers to big for an old head to digest. Locally we have folks out of work, losing their homes, people looking for answers to all the difficulties we are facing. We have seen these times before folks. We have had tough times, the depression, the recessions, the big wars, all of these times have “been” experienced. There is how ever a difference.
Today in America we seem to have lost a couple of things, we have clearly lost the sense of family. With our diversity and geographical distances we have lost the tight nit family units that helped us through tough times historically. When times got tough the families would get together and pool resources, give each other support and struggle through the hard times. Family farms, families living together in neighborhoods, families were helping with childcare, sharing the burden….. Not so much anymore hey? I think we moved into the “me” generation and frankly lost something of real value.
We also saw the sense of community and neighbors willing to work together. Some of the older folks can remember the WWII rationing and recycling drives, rubber, tin, etc… Communities of neighbors helping each other. The group effort to get the wood in for the winter, the farm families helping other farm families get the crops in or harvested.
Yeah I know sounds like that sappy movie my wife watches every year, you know the one with Jimmy Stewart in it, “It;s a wonderful Life”. But hey just because it is sappy does not make it less true. Today we might want to start looking at our history to see our way through these tough times. Instead of eating each other and striving alone maybe we should be looking at how to make an I into a “WE”. Anyone with any ideas out there or are we alone?
